Australian and New Zealand life saving crews were competing for top honours. They faced high swells which led to some interesting situations...at least for the onlookers.

A large wave suddenly separated a Sweep (helmsman) from his boat - you can just see his head to the left of the oars. He could easily have waited to be rescued, but apparently that wasn't a consideration for him.

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Australia-and-New-Zealand/New-Zealand/Piha-Big-Wave-Classic/i-cz22xDH/0/XL/_MG_2148-XL.jpg" /alt=""Hey Mate, have you seen our Sweep?"">
"Hey Mate, have you seen our Sweep?"

Doggedly he struggled with the high swells and made his way back to his boat.

However the Tasman Sea wasn't about to make it easy for him to regain his position in the back of the boat.

But Sweeps are a stubborn lot, and he wasn't about to let a mere two metre swell get the better of him.

Finally aboard he hurries to regain his position.

And this boaties crew once again has some direction.Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-21283873224532344372010-05-14T23:27:00.007-06:002013-08-26T14:16:01.363-06:00Life's First Field TripThese young goslings are on an adventure of learning and discovery. Emerald Lake is one of the most photographed spots in the Yukon. The beautiful blue-green colour of the lake is created by sunlight reflecting off a white layer of “marl” on the lake bed. Marl is a white calcium carbonate clay that forms in the water and then settles, often unevenly, onto the lake bottom. It forms when enough carbonate, from dissolving limestone, reacts with calcium in the water.

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Canada/Yukon-Territory/Yukon/i-rBcvMq5/4/XL/Emerald%20Lake%2C%20Yukon-XL.jpg" /alt="Emerald Lake, Yukon Territory">

And just down the road...Spirit Lake

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Canada/Yukon-Territory/Yukon/i-JHfj2gW/1/XL/Spirit%20Lake%2C%20Yukon-XL.jpg" /alt="Spirit Lake, Yukon">

Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-23068900549620948542009-07-07T14:17:00.005-06:002013-08-26T14:34:51.143-06:00Oops....Dropped My Ring!

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Flora-and-Fauna/Waterbirds/i-6NNbWhB/0/XL/_MG_7493-XL.jpg" /alt="Oops....Dropped My Ring!">

Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-76337774238008424782009-05-15T20:56:00.007-06:002013-08-26T14:36:59.896-06:00Hey! You with the Camera!It was reasonably warm and sunny today so I spent part of the afternoon in Hawrelak park. It seemed a very sensible thing to do as the forecast for next Tuesday is for possible flurries. However I ran into a Lesser Scaup duck who wasn't pleased to see me and didn't appreciate me taking her picture. I can just hear her calling..."Hey! You with the Camera!"

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Flora-and-Fauna/Waterbirds/i-m6txgq2/0/XL/_MG_7161-XL.jpg" /alt="Hey! With it's Mediterranean climate and more sunshine than any other large Australian city...maybe that is why everyone here seems so friendly! This photo was taken from Kings Park, a remarkable 400 hectare mix of botanic garden, quiet parkland and the unique bushland common to Western Australia.

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Australia-and-New-Zealand/Australia/Perth-WA/i-3J2HBbG/2/XL/_MG_1666a-XL.jpg" /alt="Balga - Keeper of the Trail">

Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-36907180587655448882009-03-10T21:02:00.017-06:002013-08-26T14:43:24.104-06:00Spring Breakup on the Fortymile River, Yukon Territory

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/photos/i-wvfV9sL/1/XL/i-wvfV9sL-XL.jpg" /alt="First Paddle of the Year">

"First paddle of the year." Rae Brown, Spring Breakup 1973

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/photos/i-GtDGPrg/1/XL/i-GtDGPrg-XL.jpg" /alt="Fortymile River - The Next Day">

The following day...after an ice jam let go upriver.
"We were younger then, not smarter!" Rae Brown, 2009Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-75248648756005337772009-02-19T22:35:00.008-07:002013-10-19T14:09:19.501-06:00Up Close and Personal with Madam PeleMadam Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, treated us to quite the reception as we cruised about 1 mile off shore of the big island of Hawaii. In the first photo hot lava enters the Pacific ocean at Waikupanaha, Hawaii, creating spectacular steam explosions (also called littoral explosions, because they occur at the shoreline, or littoral zone). Huge plumes of steam, gas and debris rise above the boiling water.

Actually, despite the authoritative stance, it's a grass tree (Xanthorrhoea preissii). Because it's trunk is frequently blackened by bush fires it was commonly called 'Black Boy' (in less politically correct times).

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Australia-and-New-Zealand/Australia/Perth-WA/i-pKVRFhn/1/XL/Balga-XL.jpg" /alt="Balga - Keeper of the Trail">

Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1147424863163162097.post-30067859207076830572008-10-13T11:24:00.009-06:002013-08-26T14:52:02.984-06:00Shhh! - The Fish are TalkingOn a recent visit to Edmonton's Hawrelak park a female Widgeon duck caught my attention. It was ignoring the other ducks, geese and gulls which were more focused on feeding or protecting their territory. With a playful look and one ear to the water the Widgeon seemed to be saying "Shhh!, The Fish are Talking".

<img src="http://www.tickledpixels.com/Flora-and-Fauna/Waterbirds/i-Vk7vSLS/1/XL/_MG_6085-XL.jpg" /alt="Shhh! - The Fish Are Talking">

Rae Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11210345021126749110noreply@blogger.com1
